Peramola marks its first documented mention from 1026 with a year-long series of events beginning this Sunday.
The village in the middle Segre region is commemorating the millennium since its name appeared in a historical pact signed by Count Ermengol II of Urgell and Berenguer Ramon I of Barcelona. The agreement saw Ermengol pledge loyalty to Berenguer over several castles, including those at Os, Montmagastre, Malagastre, and Artesa de Segre. Peramola featured among lands held by Arnau Mir de Tost, a vassal of Urgell, which would transfer to Barcelona should the fidelity lapse.
Historian Carles Gascón, who will speak at the launch, described the pact as sensitive. The castles lay within Urgell's natural expansion zone yet required safeguards for Barcelona, an unusual arrangement amid rival county influences.
Gascón views the milestone as valuable, even if Peramola's reference was tangential. Such celebrations, he said, foster belonging in areas facing depopulation risks.
Sunday's opening at Peramola will unveil the anniversary logo by Eudald Navarro, drawing on symbols from the ruins of the historic castle balcony. It will also feature music by Miquel Bonillo, inspired by the goigs of Sant Miquel and Castell-llebre. Organizers will outline further events planned through the year.
