Barcelona's Sagrada Família basilica reached its maximum height of 172.5 metres on Friday, 20 February 2026, with the installation of the upper arm of the cross atop the Jesus tower, making it the world's tallest church.
The operation took place that morning once weather and safety conditions allowed, and was visible from the street after advance notice for residents and visitors to watch. This completes the temple's definitive silhouette after 144 years of intermittent construction, cementing its status as Barcelona's highest point.
The three-dimensional cross, a hallmark of Antoni Gaudí's design also seen at sites like Casa Batlló, Park Güell, and Bellesguard tower, stands 17 metres tall—equivalent to a five-storey building. It features a mosaic inscription in Latin praising Jesus: "Tu solus Sanctus, Tu solus Dominus, Tu solus Altissimus."
Although structurally complete, the tower's official inauguration is set for 10 June 2026, marking the centenary of Gaudí's death. Organisers hope Pope Leo XIV will bless it during the event.
From 2027, the partially glazed tower will open as a privileged viewpoint over the Eixample district and the rest of the city. Symbolically, it will house the Agnus Dei, an artwork by Italian artist Andrea Mastrovito depicting Christ's sacrifice.
Gaudí, who died in 1926, saw only one tower—the Nativity tower—finished in his lifetime. The Jesus tower's completion closes the basilica's architectural profile, paving the way for tests of Gaudí's planned lighting effect, where the cross will glow day and night over the city.
