A hiker has died on the northern slope of Pedraforca in the Berguedà region. Rescue teams located his body early this morning after an extensive overnight search.
The alert came in at 9:34pm yesterday when the man failed to return from a climbing route in the Canal Roja area. Firefighters from the Generalitat mobilised around 20 personnel and ten units, including specialists from the Special Actions Groups (GRAE) in La Seu d'Urgell and Cerdanyola, the Search Dog Unit, a drone team, and the Medium Command Unit.
Operators narrowed the search after staff at the Lluís Estasen refuge confirmed the hiker's vehicle was parked at the Mirador de Gresolet viewpoint, focusing efforts on the base of Canal Roja. In the early hours, teams spotted tracks in the snow and scattered mountaineering gear, which led them to the body.
Mossos d'Esquadra officers secured the site until the body could be recovered by helicopter from the Mountain Intervention Unit. The Berga-based Mossos investigation unit is now handling the case.
