Key Points

  • Thumb surgery repaired ulnar collateral ligament without complications.
  • Knee surgery on 12 March to fix ACL, MCL tears, and check meniscus from same crash.
  • Physiotherapy ongoing to optimize condition for knee procedure.
  • FAE expects 6-month recovery, aiming for 2026-2027 season return.

Andorran skier Cande Moreno underwent successful surgery on her right thumb in Toulouse on Thursday, repairing the ulnar collateral ligament injured in her downhill crash at the Milano-Cortina Olympics.

Bernat Escoda, doctor for the Andorran Ski Federation (FAE), confirmed the procedure proceeded without complications. Medical staff expect the thumb to be nearly fully recovered by her left knee surgery scheduled for 12 March.

That operation will repair tears to the anterior cruciate ligament and medial collateral ligament in the knee—both from the same Olympic fall. Surgeons plan to inspect the meniscus during the procedure to assess its condition. Initial assessments had not planned to address the medial collateral ligament, but it will now be included.

Escoda noted the thumb repair positions Moreno well for the knee intervention. She travelled to Toulouse on Thursday for the operation and has continued a specific physiotherapy regimen since returning from the Games. The programme aims to boost muscle tone and minimise inflammation, ensuring she enters surgery in optimal shape.

The FAE anticipates about six months of recovery time, with hopes Moreno can join her second pre-season training camp in South America. The goal is for her to resume competitive skiing around November for the 2026-2027 season with relative normality.
