Key Points

  • Mijares (bib 52) timed 54.50s, 4.26s behind leader Rast's 50.24s; points line 53.73s.
  • Strong lower sectors: 57th, 52nd, 35th, 19th; early top error cost rhythm.
  • Coach Alayrach positive: 'Just 0.77s away despite off day, validating training.'
  • Recent 18th in Semmering; next: Flachau Jan 13, Olympics Feb 18.

Andorran skier Carla Mijares finished 41st in the first run of the World Cup slalom in Kranjska Gora, Slovenia, on Sunday, missing the top-30 cutoff for points and a second run by just 0.77 seconds.

Starting with bib 52, Mijares recorded 54.50 seconds, 4.26 seconds behind leader Camille Rast of Switzerland, who clocked 50.24. Italy's Emilia Mondinelli set the points line at 53.73 in a demanding course where 25 competitors did not finish. The first run began at 9.30am, with the second round planned for 12.15pm.

Mijares gained momentum lower down the hill, with sector times of +0.73 (57th), +1.65 (52nd), +0.94 (35th), and +0.94 (19th). Her biggest time loss came in the second sector due to an early error at the top that disrupted her rhythm.

Coach Josh Alayrach remained positive, noting the team felt encouraged despite the subpar run. "We're upbeat—today her skiing didn't fully click; she made a mistake up top that cost a lot of time and she couldn't quite recover her flow," he said. He highlighted the close margin as motivation: "With a leg far from our level, we were just 0.77 away, so we're fired up and need to keep working as we are." Alayrach called the performance another step in validating their training approach.

The outing follows Mijares's recent highlights: her first World Cup points with an 18th-place finish in Semmering and a Creand FIS Cup slalom victory in Soldeu. She had trained on the Kranjska Gora slope the day before, a venue familiar from her 2023 FIS races.

Next up for Mijares is a night slalom in Flachau on January 13, followed by Spindleruv Mlyn on January 25, Åre on March 15, and the women's Olympic slalom in Cortina d'Ampezzo on February 18.
