Zauchensee Super-G Cancelled, Relocated to Andorra's Soldeu
Bad weather forces FIS to move women's World Cup super-G from Austria to Grandvalira, Andorra, on 28 February, part of a three-race weekend.
Key Points
- Zauchensee super-G cancelled due to snow, winds, low visibility; downhill training limited.
- Event rescheduled to Soldeu el Tarter's Àliga slope on 28 Feb, with DH on 27 Feb and another SG on 1 Mar.
- Andorran skier Cande Moreno 12th in Europa Cup DH training; Íria Medina 3rd in FIS GS in Sestrière.
- Men's Europa Cup slalom in Crans Montana challenging; Bartumeu Gabriel and Xavier Cornella DNF first run.
Bad weather in Zauchensee, Austria, led to the cancellation of Sunday's women's World Cup super-G, with the International Ski Federation (FIS) relocating the event to Andorra's Soldeu el Tarter venue. The race, originally set for 11 or 12 January, will now take place on the Àliga slope on Saturday, 28 February, creating a three-race programme at Grandvalira: a downhill on Friday 27 February and super-Gs on 28 February and 1 March.
The Austrian resort struggled through a difficult week, managing only Thursday's downhill training from a reserve start. Friday's session was cancelled, while Saturday's downhill proceeded on a much-shortened course. Sunday's conditions—intense snow, high winds and low visibility—prevented any start to the super-G.
Teams are due to arrive on Tuesday 24 February, with downhill training scheduled for Wednesday 25 and Thursday 26. Friday's downhill replaces what had been a training day in the original schedule.
Andorran skier Cande Moreno, who was slated to compete in Zauchensee alongside teammate Jorgina Caminal, instead took part in Europa Cup downhill training at Pass Thurn, Austria. After Monday's cancellation, Tuesday's session saw Moreno finish 12th in 1:37.64, 0.90 seconds behind leader Fabiana Dorigo, while Caminal placed 36th in 1:38.85. Both are entered in Wednesday's first downhill race, with Caminal also racing Friday's second downhill; Moreno will then join the World Cup in Tarvisio.
Caminal marked her World Cup debut with 53rd place in the St. Moritz downhill, following strong earlier performances there.
Elsewhere, Íria Medina earned third place in a second FIS giant slalom at Italy's Grand Prix in Sestrière, clocking 2:10.00 for 25.17 FIS points—improving on her prior 30.09 total—and finishing just 0.17 seconds behind winner Melissa Astegiano. Lara Baumann took second. Medina's trainer, Ibon Mintegui, praised her intelligent first-run skiing, where she was sixth, 0.43 seconds off the pace.
In the men's Europa Cup slalom opener at Crans Montana, Switzerland, Bartumeu Gabriel and Xavier Cornella both failed to finish the first run on a bumpy course that saw 37 of 100 starters drop out, particularly challenging high bib numbers. Both are set for a second chance there.
