Andorran tennis player Vicky Jiménez was eliminated in the first round of the WTA 125 tournament in Oeiras, Portugal, losing 4-6, 4-6 to Spain's Leyre Romero Gormaz. The 23-year-old Valencian, ranked 143rd, advanced to the last 16 to face Serbia's Lola Radivojević, 21, the world number 139.
Jiménez, world number 119 and the fourth seed in the singles draw, struggled from the start. She dropped her first two service games in the opening set and, despite leading 4-1 in the second, lost five straight games to her opponent.
The result followed a month-long break after her second-round qualifying defeat at the Australian Open on 14 January, where she fell 1-6, 2-6 to China's Lin Zhu, then ranked 163rd. A flu illness then sidelined her, forcing her to miss the WTA 125 in Ostrava, Czech Republic.
Jiménez remains in the Oeiras doubles draw, where she and Czech partner Dominika Salkova reached the quarter-finals with a 7-6 (7-1), 6-0 win over Britain's Eden Silva and Freya Christie.
The hard-court event prepares her for an upcoming US swing, including the WTA 250 Austin Open and the WTA 1000 Indian Wells Masters in California. She is also scheduled for a second WTA 125 in Oeiras next week.
