Key Points

  • N-145 road to Andorra reopened at 4pm after head-on crash at km 6.2 near Valls de Valira.
  • Four people treated for light injuries; vehicles blocked both directions amid Labour Day traffic.
  • Queues peaked at over 7km northbound and 4km southbound due to crash and holiday congestion.
  • Heavy inbound traffic from Spain's May 1 holiday caused progressive delays on N-145.

The N-145 road linking Andorra to La Seu d'Urgell fully reopened around 4pm on Friday after a head-on crash between two Spanish-registered cars at kilometre 6.2 near Valls de Valira, where four people received treatment for light injuries.

The collision occurred shortly after 1pm amid heavy inbound traffic from Spain's May 1 Labour Day holiday. Catalan traffic services reported the vehicles blocked both directions with major material damage, leading to a full closure until about 2pm. Responders included two Generalitat firefighter crews, Mossos d'Esquadra officers, a Guardia Civil patrol, and SEM medical units, who treated all four occupants at the scene.

Diversions were in place during the shutdown, but queues formed rapidly due to the blockage and existing congestion. Northbound delays toward Andorra peaked above seven kilometres, while southbound backups reached up to four kilometres. Wreckage removal and holiday volumes caused ongoing delays even after the initial reopening.

Inbound queues had built progressively through the day. Earlier Friday morning, northbound congestion on the N-145 exceeded three kilometres past the Rio Runer border, stretching through Valls de Valira. Intermittent holdups of up to 1.5 kilometres formed from the La Seu d'Urgell roundabout, particularly in Anserall where traffic moved slowly. Mobility services attributed this to the holiday influx of day trippers and weekend visitors from Spain.

Outbound traffic faced similar pressure from Thursday afternoon, as residents began their long weekend. Queues on the CG-1 toward the Farga de Moles border crossing reached two kilometres from the Epizen shopping centre in Sant Julià de Lòria, with only one southbound lane operating and congestion noted around the Rio Runer area from 4pm. By Friday morning, both directions saw about one kilometre of queues near the border, expected to ease through the day.

Mobility officials anticipate the heaviest pressure Saturday afternoon during the return operation after the holiday bridge. The crash investigation is ongoing.
