Andorra Telecom has launched Apple's Emergency SOS via Satellite service throughout the Principat, enabling iPhone 14 and later models, as well as Apple Watch Ultra 3, to connect with emergency services in areas lacking mobile or Wi-Fi signals.
The service activates when users dial 112 in such locations. Devices display a short questionnaire to collect key details about the incident, which are then sent via satellite to aid responders.
In coordination with the Department of Fire Prevention, Extinction and Rescue (DPEIS), Andorra Telecom has connected the feature to the national emergency network. It is accessible to both residents and visitors using compatible devices.
The initiative bolsters safety in Andorra's rugged mountain regions, where signal gaps are common during outdoor activities. It aligns with preparations for the upcoming National Emergency Centre (CNE 112) and forms part of broader efforts to integrate similar capabilities from other manufacturers.
Jordi Nadal, Andorra Telecom's director general, highlighted the partnership with groups like the Andorran fire service to implement the technology. Justice and Interior Minister Ester Molné described it as a key step in modernising emergency response systems.
