Heavy snowfalls, full ski operations, and events drove strong winter demand despite higher rates, staffing
shortages, and road closures.
Key Points
- 80.52% occupancy, up from 77.31% in 2025, due to snow and ski demand.
- Weekends peaked at 95.42%, with 99.18% in Pas de la Casa.
- Events like Skimo Comapedrosa and Van Gogh Alive boosted visitors.
- Staffing shortages and RN-20 road closure pose ongoing risks.
Andorra's hotels achieved an 80.52% occupancy rate in January 2026, up 3.21 percentage points from 77.31% the previous year, according to figures released by the Unió Hotelera d'Andorra (UHA). The sector attributes the gains to strong winter demand fueled by heavy snowfalls, full ski resort operations, mountain activities, and end-of-season sales, all accomplished with room rates that were largely higher than in 2025.
The UHA described January as a key month with high activity levels and a positive market response. Weekends performed exceptionally, peaking at 95.42% overall on 30-31 January, including 99.18% in Pas de la Casa and 97.51% in Escaldes-Engordany. The final full week, from 26 January to 1 February, averaged 84.76%, showing sustained midweek strength. Events such as Skimo Comapedrosa, Trofeu Borrufa, Van Gogh Alive, the New Year's concert, Sant Antoni escudelles, and Ordino's Cota 1.300 contributed to the influx.
Bookings for early February and beyond remain solid, giving the UHA optimism for the rest of the winter season if service standards are maintained. However, the association highlighted ongoing staffing shortages, urging the government to introduce a new nine-month seasonal contract to bridge summer and winter periods and improve worker retention. UHA director Albert Mora explained that intensifying summer competition and the entry-exit scheme prevent staff from easily shifting between Andorra's winters and Ibiza's summers. "To stay competitive, we need to provide a longer season," he said, noting that despite collective efforts, many hotels still face gaps.
The extended closure of the RN-20 road presents another challenge, especially for short-stay guests like weekend skiers. January saw only minor disruptions, but the structural issue has prompted some cancellations. Long-stay visitors appear less deterred, often opting for detours, though widespread snow in other areas diminishes Andorra's advantage. Mora expressed particular concern for Pas de la Casa's Carnival, though the UHA awaits concrete data on the full effects.
