The Andorran government plans to expand its public housing stock this year by purchasing additional buildings, using the budget surplus to bolster affordable housing options.

Economy, Business and Housing Minister Conxita Marsol announced the initiative, noting that the executive has already introduced several measures to increase the supply of affordable homes. By the end of the current legislative term in three years, the government aims to reach around 500 public housing units, representing a significant budgetary commitment.

"Our intention is to continue building public housing stock, that much is clear," Marsol stated, while acknowledging the challenges in meeting ambitious targets. She admitted that achieving the 20% quota of public housing demanded by trade unions to address the housing crisis will not be straightforward.

The latest step involves direct acquisitions to grow state-owned property. "This year we will already acquire new buildings to have a bit more public housing," Marsol explained. The move is enabled by the recent budget surplus, which the government views as an opportune moment to redirect funds toward property purchases.

The process will proceed through a public tender, allowing owners to submit offers. Once acquired, the buildings will integrate into the state's patrimony, with the government opting to retain full ownership rather than other arrangements.

Marsol highlighted the rapid progress, suggesting that adding another 150 units to the projected 500 would mark a notable achievement. "I believe few countries have achieved such a high percentage of public housing in three or four years," she said, adding that only one year remains before the 2027 general elections.
