The World Press Photo exhibition will arrive in Andorra for the first time next year, hosted at the former Hotel Pol – Centre Cultural in Sant Julià de Lòria from 10 to 30 June 2026.
Organised by Reunió de Papaia and Grisart Lab, the display features winning images from the 2026 World Press Photo Contest. Jurors selected them from 57,376 submissions by 3,747 photographers across 141 countries. The photographs cover global conflicts, climate challenges, social struggles, and personal stories of daily life, resistance, and endurance.
Andorra joins the exhibition's annual worldwide tour, which visits more than 60 cities and reaches millions of viewers. The event marks one of the earliest stops for the 2026 edition, ahead of its run in Barcelona later that year. Organisers pursued the opportunity for two years, including an unsuccessful bid last year during the L'Andart biennial.
Backers include Reig Fundació as the lead sponsor, the Sant Julià de Lòria commune, the Ministry of Culture, the Associació de Professionals de la Comunicació d’Andorra, and Amics del Disseny d’Andorra.
Pere Moles from Reunió de Papaia noted the organisers' strict requirements, such as fitting out the venue with carpet and black curtains since it is not a dedicated gallery. World Press Photo provides the large pre-assembled panels. Entry fees—€5 general, €3 reduced—add a sense of occasion, he said.
The venue will be open Tuesday to Saturday from 11am to 8pm, and Sundays from 11am to 14pm.
Joumana El Zein Khoury, the organisation's executive director, highlighted the contest's emphasis on thoughtful storytelling and building trust through images. Since adopting a regional contest model in 2021, it has boosted diverse perspectives, with most 2026 winners from the regions they document.
Founded in 1955 in the Netherlands, World Press Photo is an independent non-profit promoting photojournalism, documentary photography, critical thinking, and dialogue on major issues. Moles added that hosting it could help counter perceptions of limited transparency in Andorran journalism.
