Andorra Launches Eighth Linguistic Survey Wave to Track Language Use Post-2024 Law

Andorra Recerca i Innovació (AR+I) began telephone fieldwork on Tuesday for the eighth wave of its quadrennial survey on linguistic knowledge and usage, aiming to conduct around 800 interviews with residents aged 15 and older who have fixed or mobile phone lines.

The sociology team at AR+I kicked off the data collection phase this week to inform the 2026 linguistic report, commissioned by the government's Language Policy Department. Established in 1995 and handled by AR+I since 2009, this barometer—one of the Principat's longest-running surveys—provides a snapshot of current conditions and trends in Catalan, Andorra's official language, as well as Spanish, French, Portuguese, English, and others. This iteration is the first since the Language Law entered into force in April 2024.

The three-week fieldwork targets language practices in interpersonal settings, including family, friends, work, public bodies, and socioeconomic contexts. It will also identify and quantify mother tongues and languages of personal identification, while measuring proficiency through questions comparable to those used in other Catalan-speaking areas.

Following fieldwork, data analysis and report preparation will run from July to September, with findings due for release between November and December.
