Around 50 Andorrans will join a prayer vigil with Pope Leo XIV at Barcelona's Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys on 9 June at 8pm. The event marks one of the first major public appearances of the new pontificate and draws believers from multiple dioceses.
The group forms part of the Urgell Diocese contingent, which quickly filled all 300 spots allocated by the Archdiocese of Barcelona. Registrations closed on 22 May after an immediate response spread via the diocese website, social media, and parishes. Participants represent all archpriestries in the diocese and include families, youth, catechists, religious, couples, and committed laypeople.
High demand prompted the diocese to add a second coach, enabling nearly 90 people to travel together. The service departs from Plaça Guillemó in Andorra la Vella next Tuesday morning, picking up passengers en route to the Catalan capital.
Marta Meya from the Urgell Diocese's General Secretariat described the gathering as a day of fellowship and prayer to strengthen faith ties across the region. Youth delegate Mn. Àlex Vargas noted growing interest among young people seeking deeper meaning amid modern emptiness, evident in recent Friday Eucharistic adorations and an April vocational retreat. The youth delegation has scheduled the next event for 12 June at 7pm in the Urgell Diocesan Seminary, featuring reflection, adoration, and socializing.
Andorra's Head of Government Xavier Espot and General Syndic Carles Ensenyat will attend in an official capacity. The vigil fits into Pope Leo XIV's Barcelona visit on 9-10 June, which also includes a Mass at the Sagrada Família and the blessing of the Jesus tower for Antoni Gaudí's centenary.
