A record-breaking circle dance attracted large crowds to Plaça del Poble in Andorra la Vella on Sunday midday, forming the highlight of the Contrapàs event at the town's main festival.
Junior Consul Olalla Losada, who joined the dance, gave a positive assessment, noting no incidents and strong community spirit. For the first time, participants formed one large ring rather than smaller groups, led by the Esbart Dansaire d'Andorra la Vella. She highlighted how the dance fosters unity and embodies Andorra la Vella's traditions.
Losada stressed balancing safety, shade, and space in the square. Officials have considered various shading systems but face challenges from high winds, where tent providers cannot fully guarantee stability. Covering the area completely would also prevent events like the giants' dance. Newly planted trees are slowly providing more cover each year, and any solutions must maintain an open plaza. Mechanical options remain unexamined pending technical and cost reviews. "Finding equilibrium between security, shade, and open activities is essential," she said.
Attendees coped with the sun using council-supplied hats and fans behind the seating area. A Saturday shower had moderated Sunday's heat, though shade was still limited.
Three days into the festival, Losada praised the responsible atmosphere matching the opening address's call for restraint. She expects the good mood to continue over the remaining two days.
On noise issues from Guillemó residents near evening concerts at Plaça de les Arcades, Losada acknowledged the inconvenience from larger stages, screens, and equipment required by artists. The central spot allows easy pedestrian access, boosts tourism, and creates a unique communal vibe. No equivalent venue exists currently, though the future Espai Capital in Prada Casadet may offer an option. Efforts centre on reducing disruption within the constraints.
