Record-Breaking Circle Dance Draws Crowds to Andorra la Vella Festival

A record-breaking circle dance drew large crowds to Plaça del Poble in Andorra la Vella on Sunday, forming a single massive ring for the first time during the Contrapàs at the town's main festival.

Junior Consul Olalla Losada, who took part in the event, described it as a success with no incidents and a strong sense of community. The Esbart Dansaire d'Andorra la Vella led the performance before inviting everyone to join in the large final circle—a step forward from last year, when smaller groups formed instead. "It builds community," she said, crediting the dance troupe for promoting the tradition, which holds special significance for the capital.

Lack of shade again dominated the day amid the midday sun, despite a Saturday shower easing the heat slightly. Losada explained that officials have consulted multiple companies about shading structures, but none can fully guarantee safety against the square's frequent winds. Even a 95% reliable option would be rejected. "We prefer a sunny square to an unsafe one," she noted. Full coverage would also block space for the giants' dances, including yesterday's appearance by Carlemany and Ermesenda, as well as visiting groups. Two main challenges—safety and open space—persist, though newly planted trees offer gradual relief and future mechanical solutions await technical and cost assessments.

Council-provided hats and fans helped attendees behind the seating area. Three days into the festival, Losada highlighted the responsible mood in line with the opening call for restraint, expecting it to last through the final two days.

On evening concerts at Plaça de les Arcades—from Guillemó residents' perspective—Losada recognised the disruption from larger stages, screens and equipment. The central location aids pedestrian access, supports tourism and fosters a shared atmosphere, with no current alternative. The forthcoming Espai Capital in Prada Casadet could provide one in future editions.

The festival featured a world premiere on Saturday: the Principal de la Bisbal performed the new sardana La gresca dels andorrans, composed by Josep Cassús on commission from Teo Armengol. "It's a homage to all cultural groups in the country—giant troupes, falles, dance groups and sardana circles," Armengol said. Debuting on a festival Sunday made it especially fitting as a future anthem for cultural heritage stewards.
