Andorra Opticians Sell Out Eclipse Glasses Amid Frenzy for Partial Solar Event

Opticians and pharmacies across Andorra have sold thousands of certified eclipse glasses in the lead-up to the partial solar eclipse on 12 August, with stocks largely depleted amid widespread public interest.

Shops in Andorra la Vella and Escaldes-Engordany report exhausting supplies within two weeks, despite the event's limited visibility from the Principat. The eclipse will reach near-maximum coverage but remain partial, starting around 19:33, peaking at 20:27, and ending shortly before 21:00—though sunset and mountains will obscure the final stages for many viewers. Experts like astrophysicist Joan-Marc Miralles emphasise that even 98-99% obscuration differs vastly from totality, as residual sunlight prevents darkening or phenomena like Baily's beads.

Óptica Pasteur sold about 1,000 units before running out, unable to secure more from suppliers. Opti-k moved 600 pairs, depleting its last batch recently, with manager Carme Lacondeguy citing strong resident enthusiasm for certified eyewear. Centre Òptic Porqueres initially stocked only 30 pairs, surprised by demand; staffer Georgia Baiges said families bought multiples, some for trips to total-eclipse zones like Galicia. Òptica Creu Verda and others note surging inquiries despite empty shelves. Pharmacy Roser Miró is also out of stock and seeking restocks, while Euro Òptica has limited units vanishing quickly. Cottet Òptica sold 200 last Tuesday and continues ordering; Lara Benítez reported family purchases. Òptica Visual provides one free pair per other transaction.

The frenzy extends beyond retail. La Massana's Eclipse Festival filled its 150 spots rapidly, mostly families, alongside an astrophotography workshop by Associació Fotogràfica Valls del Nord (AFVAN). President Miguel A. Borrachero stressed precise preparation, solar filters, and no room for errors in the brief event.

Specialists urge elevated west-facing spots like Port de Cabús, weather permitting, and warn against non-homologated viewers—recommending projection over direct gaze to avoid irreversible retinal damage. Guide Jordi Colell highlights growing astronomy interest, boosted by social media and La Massana's Starlight status.
