Andorran Photographer Naiara Escabias Wins Award for Glacier Series at Olot Biennial

Andorran photographer Naiara Escabias has received one of four awards for best projects at the XVI Biennal - Mostra Internacional de Fotografia d’Olot with her exhibition Ferides de gel, chosen from 40 submissions.

The collection comprises seven large-format abstract pieces, up to 150 x 100 centimetres, produced via Polaroid transfer and Emulsion Lift techniques on digital photography. Some works integrate over 135 films, far exceeding her prior efforts of about 20. Drawing from an Iceland journey, the series explores glaciers’ majesty, strength, and fragility as they melt and transform—challenging perceptions of their permanence.

Escabias called the recognition a career highlight. Technical hurdles nearly derailed the effort, but family, friends, and trial-and-error refinement sustained her. The installation proved so moving that she wept seeing it complete. She described the win as “spectacular,” with attendees praising the show’s emotional resonance and her growth since last year’s awarded series Caminant als meus refugis. Many deemed it among the biennial’s strongest.

Displayed at Olot’s Claustre de l’Hospici, a key venue, the exhibition opened 31 July as part of the biennial’s weekend programme of professional and amateur photography across town sites, plus workshops. Andorra’s government provided essential support.
