The meeting occurred yesterday at the Port de Rat, involving authorities and representatives from Andorra's Ordino parish and France's Auzat commune in Ariège. Organisers intend for it to continue in coming years, building on last year's revival after a two-decade pause.
The tradition stems from historical grazing and trade links between the valleys, which weakened over the 20th century. On 25 September 1992, local administrations signed a cooperation agreement to promote exchanges and collaboration. Periodic gatherings followed until they lapsed, with the 2025 event resuming direct community contact.
Ordino's senior councillor, Maria del Mar Coma, highlighted overlapping cultural elements including dry-stone construction, pasturing, and livestock farming. She described the ties with neighbouring Auzat as vital, stating that the communities share extensive heritage that demands ongoing consolidation.
Participants enjoyed a lunch with local products from both sides and exchanged gifts. Ordino's delegation gave Auzat mayor Abdel El Yacoubi and Ariège Pyrenees Regional Natural Park president Kamel Chibli a photo collection of Ordino as a biosphere reserve and a book on dry-stone building techniques, a joint legacy.
Auzat's mayor noted growing attendance compared to last year, including more institutional representatives, hikers, and mountaineers. The event underscored cooperation in protected areas: Ordino's Vall de Sorteny Natural Park and Comapedrosa Valleys Communal Natural Park alongside Auzat's Ariège Pyrenees park form part of the Pyrenees Three Nations Park network, advancing shared mountain projects.
