Key Points

  • Ateca, from Sant Julià de Lòria, Andorra, beat four male nominees for Sirat.
  • Only second woman to win Goya production design in 40 years, after 2011.
  • Previously won Gaudí and European Film Academy awards for same film.
  • Ceremony addressed Gaza violence, gender abuse, and marginalized groups.

Andorran art director Laia Ateca from Sant Julià de Lòria has won the Goya Award for best production design at the 40th edition of Spain's top film honours. Her work on *Sirat*, directed by Oliver Laxe, earned her the prize during the ceremony held on Saturday at Barcelona's Auditori Fòrum in the CCIB.

Ateca dedicated the award "to all the women who sustain art departments," specifically acknowledging those who have opened doors and those yet to come. She was the only woman nominated in the category, competing against Juan Pedro de Gaspar (*El cautivo*), Koldo Vallés (*La cena*), Pepe Domínguez del Olmo (*Los Tigres*), and Mikel Serrano (*Maspalomas*). Her victory marks her as just the second woman to receive a Goya in production design across 40 editions, following Ana Alvargonzález for *Pa negre* in 2011.

The win adds to an already impressive run for Ateca on *Sirat*. She previously collected the same honour at the Catalan Gaudí Awards and from the European Film Academy. The film itself was a standout at the Goyas, with actor Sergi López among its stars.

The ceremony highlighted broader issues, including denunciations of violence from Gaza to gender-based abuse, and calls for visibility for marginalised groups.

Ateca's accolades are boosting her profile beyond Catalan cinema circles. While *Sirat*'s production design is not directly nominated at the Oscars, the film is in contention for Spain's selection as best international feature and could also compete in sound.
