Key Points

Actor Oriol Pla (Barcelona, 1993) won the International Emmy Award for Best Actor for his role in the Disney+ series Yo, adicto. The six-episode autobiographical drama, based on Javier Giner’s book, follows Giner’s recovery after voluntarily entering a detox centre at age 30; Giner co-directed the series with Elena Trapé. Pla plays Javier Giner.
Speaking to Catalunya Ràdio after the ceremony in New York, Pla said he experienced the gala with great nerves and emotion, describing it as “like being in a film.” He added that he had poured himself into the role “with all the love in the world,” and had not been thinking about awards.
Another Catalan success at the International Emmys was director Joanna Pardos, who won in the sports documentary category for Netflix’s #SeAcabó: Diario de las campeonas. Released on 1 November, the film brings together Jenni Hermoso, Alexia Putellas, Irene Paredes and Aitana Bonmatí to revisit the non-consensual kiss by Luis Rubiales that had a lasting impact on women’s football.
Pardos told TV3 she was moved and eager to return to Barcelona to celebrate with her team. She said she had been surprised by the win and stressed the visibility challenges faced by non-fiction documentaries, adding that she hoped the award would give a boost to work on these topics.
