The Pyrenees Board Game Festival marks its tenth edition with an expanded seven-week programme, new venues, and expectations to exceed 14,000 visitors.
The main events will run from 27 to 29 March in La Seu d'Urgell, though activities begin on 9 March and continue until 26 April. Attendance has risen by more than 2,000 visitors annually in the past two editions, fuelling organisers' confidence in further growth.
A highlight is an exhibition on Elizabeth Magie, the original creator of the Landlord's Game, which evolved into Monopoly—the first modern board game to achieve global success. Festival co-director Pablo Giménez said the display, opening on 27 March, aims to correct the historical oversight of Magie's contributions. Organisers plan a signature campaign to persuade La Seu d'Urgell town hall to name a street after her, noting only one such street exists—a small alley in northern France, whose dedication remains unconfirmed.
New locations include the Hotel el Castell de Ciutat, hosting strategy and historical game sessions in its old castle section. For the first time, the festival will visit Oliana school in Alt Urgell to engage pupils, and offer tailored activities at the Llar de Sant Josep care home. The Ateneu de l'Alt Urgell joins as a late-night gaming spot, open until 2am.
La Seu d'Urgell deputy mayor for economic promotion, Gemma Tó, described the festival as a "world reference" event, serving as both a key board game gathering and a showcase for the region through its diverse play experiences.
The Premis Catalunya awards introduce a category for the best role-playing game published in Catalan, alongside prizes for top children's, family, and advanced games. The 'Friend of Gaming' award goes to Ayudar Jugando, recognising its fundraising for vulnerable children in care homes, at-risk community play centres, and hospitals.
