Subirachs' Clio reinstated and given prime position in Plaça Calonge revamp

The sculpture Clio by Josep Maria Subirachs has been returned to Plaça Calonge in Sant Julià de Lòria and placed in a more prominent position as part of the square’s ongoing refurbishment. Previous works around the area had relegated the piece, and the current remodel was designed to increase its visibility.

Created in 1989, the work depicts a headless female bust with a face in relief carved into the stone beneath the bust, representing the goddess Clio, the muse of history and heroic poetry in Greek mythology.

The refurbishment will alter the appearance of the square and its surroundings and is scheduled for completion in early next year. Plans include removing some architectural barriers, reorganising benches, and eliminating the underground waste containers that residents have long requested be removed. The project also adds greener, better-lit spaces and extends paving up to the roadway to prioritise pedestrians.

Construction has required some traffic changes while works are under way.
