The World Press Photo 2026 exhibition will debut in Andorra from June 10 to 30 at the Hotel Pol – Centre Cultural in Sant Julià de Lòria, presenting winning images from 57,376 submissions by 3,747 photographers across 141 countries. Winners will be revealed on April 23, with the compact show marking Andorra's first entry on the global tour that visits over 60 cities annually, ahead of its Barcelona stop later in the year.
Reunió de Papaia, working with Grisart Lab and the Andorran Association of Communication Professionals, secured the event after two years of effort. A previous attempt last year, timed with the L’Andart biennial, did not succeed. Pere Moles from Reunió de Papaia explained that the former hotel venue demands specific modifications, including carpeting and black curtains, to satisfy the Amsterdam foundation's rigorous standards. Large panels arrive pre-assembled for swift setup.
The selected photographs deliver exceptional journalistic and artistic impact, depicting global conflicts, natural disasters, climate challenges, social movements, sports achievements, political events, and personal tales of endurance. This year's contest prioritizes regional photographers documenting their own locales, a trend amplified since regional competitions launched in 2021. Diari d'Andorra reports 42 award-winning photographers featured.
World Press Photo executive director Joumana El Zein Khoury described the thoughtful storytelling in each prizewinning entry, which builds trust and insight via imagery. Founded in 1955 in the Netherlands as a nonprofit, the organization advances photojournalism and documentary photography to spark critical debate on pressing issues.
The venue operates Tuesday to Saturday from 11:00 to 20:00 and Sundays from 11:00 to 14:00. Admission costs €5 general and €3 reduced. Moles called the fee a way to lend gravity to the occasion.
Funding comes from lead sponsor Reig Fundació, Sant Julià de Lòria council, the Andorran Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, the government, and others including Amics del Disseny d’Andorra. Moles added that media professionals' role helps challenge perceptions of Andorra's media opacity and transparency gaps.
