Andorra Hits Near-30°C Heat in Late May as Warm African Air Dominates

Andorra is experiencing unusually warm late-May weather, with temperatures approaching 30°C in southern areas this Friday. A mass of warm air from North Africa, linked to an anticyclonic ridge, is driving the heat and ensuring stable conditions through the weekend.

The meteorological service forecasts a sunny Friday with light northerly winds. Maximum temperatures will reach 28°C in Andorra la Vella, 25°C at 1,500 metres and 13°C at Pas de la Casa, though southern sectors could hit 30°C. Minimums are expected at 11°C in the capital, 6°C at mid-altitude and 7°C in the mountains.

Saturday will see a slight rise, with highs of 29°C in Andorra la Vella, 26°C at 1,500 metres and around 13°C at Pas de la Casa. Minimums will be 12°C in the capital, 8°C at mid-altitude and 8°C higher up. High pressure will block fronts and precipitation, maintaining the summery feel.

The service describes this as an atypical heat episode for May, with anomalies up to 10°C over the past week, particularly at lower elevations. One forecast notes isolated afternoon clouds today, possibly bringing light showers to northern extremes, but with today's maxima limited to 24°C in Andorra la Vella, 21°C at 1,500 metres and 10°C at Pas de la Casa.

Early next week, afternoon showers may return, some potentially thundery, though temperatures will stay above 25°C.
