Key Points
- Chamois population grew to 1,186 from 1,119, with 26.14% growth rate and no diseases.
- 221 kills set for chamois week Sept 13-20 in common grounds, up from 201 authorised last year.
- 16 kills allocated to reserves like Xixerella and Ransol; Enclar has separate plan for 30.
- Quotas based on censuses to ensure sustainable management under Andorra's hunting law.
The Hunting Monitoring Commission has approved quotas for 237 chamois kills during the 2026 season, up from 223 the previous year, following a population increase to 1,186 animals.
The commission, which met on Tuesday under the chairmanship of Environment, Agriculture and Livestock Minister Guillem Casal, based its decision on forestry censuses showing growth from 1,119 chamois in 2025. The population growth rate rose to 26.14% from 21.89%, with no diseases detected in monitored animals.
Of the total, 221 kills will occur during chamois week from 13 to 20 September in common hunting grounds, an increase of 20 from last season. In 2025, hunters took 164 of 201 authorised chamois during that period, or 81%, with a peak of 50 kills on the busiest day.
Applications reached 401 this year, seven more than the 394 recorded previously, comprising 207 group hunts and 194 individual requests. Assignments await Council of Ministers approval and a ministerial order in the BOPA, with licences and tags available from 1 September.
The remaining 16 kills are allocated to reserves: six at Xixerella and 10 at Ransol valley and Vall de Sorteny Natural Park. Enclar reserve has a specific plan for 30 kills—two trophy males and 28 selective—between 19 October and 25 December.
These limits follow Andorra's hunting law and annual censuses, ensuring quotas match the species' status for sustainable management of mountain ecosystems and wildlife.
