La Massana Council Builds Safer Steps on Percanela Path in Comapedrosa Park

Improvements employ sustainable dry stone methods to reduce slipping risks and boost accessibility for hikers in the natural park.

Key Points

  • Improvements target damaged stretches with steep gradients and loose rocks.
  • Workers use traditional dry stone technique with local stones for sustainable steps.
  • Master builder Pedro López oversees stone selection and firm placement.
  • Project trains parish environment agents to preserve traditional skills.

La Massana parish council is carrying out improvements on several sections of the Percanela path in the Comapedrosa Natural Park to enhance its condition and make it safer for walkers.

The work focuses on the most damaged stretches, particularly those with steep gradients and loose rocky ground. Using the traditional dry stone technique, workers are building steps from local stones to reduce slipping risks and improve accessibility. This method, deeply rooted in mountain landscapes, relies solely on placing nearby rocks without additional materials, ensuring full sustainability.

Master dry stone builder Pedro López described the process: selecting suitable stones and stamping them firmly into place to form stable steps.

The project also serves as training for the parish's environment agents, who are learning the craft during the repairs. This approach allows maintenance efforts to preserve traditional skills alongside path upkeep.

The council plans to continue conserving communal paths through environmentally sensitive interventions tailored to the local terrain, as it has done previously on routes like the one to the Comapedrosa Refuge.
