Key Points

  • Leak on Carrer del Pobladó caused 270,000-litre daily loss (5% of parish consumption).
  • Digitalization launched Dec 2023 raised network efficiency to 76%, enabling precise detection.
  • New system sectors network for better monitoring, reducing disruptions and waste.
  • First success; full parish digitalization planned this year amid climate goals.

Andorra la Vella has repaired a major water leak on Carrer del Pobladó, halting daily losses of 270,000 litres that accounted for 5% of the parish's total consumption.

Councillor for Public Services, Environment, and Natural Heritage Jordi Cabanes highlighted that this volume equals the daily usage of over 1,000 residents or enough to fill an Olympic swimming pool every ten days. The repair stemmed from the recently completed digitalization and sectorization of the drinking water network, launched in December 2023.

Cabanes stated that the upgraded system has lifted network efficiency to 76%, enabling faster and more precise leak detection. "It enhances control and management of the water supply, with quicker responses to incidents," he noted. The technology also limits service disruptions for users and supports more sustainable resource use.

Prior studies had indicated water losses as high as 40% due to leaks and inadequate monitoring. The new setup divides the network into sectors for targeted oversight, paving the way for automated processes, better pressure and consumption readings, and ongoing maintenance planning.

Authorities view the Carrer del Pobladó fix as the first clear success of the project, with plans to fully digitalize the entire parish network this year. The initiative aligns with broader sustainability goals amid climate pressures, aiming to curb waste and ensure long-term efficiency.
