Key Points

  • APAPMA rejects cable car linking to Riu Valley's Tibetan bridge in Canillo.
  • Criticizes project as 'Disneyfication' extending tourism model for economic gain.
  • Opposes further paid attractions to boost visitor numbers.
  • Demands mandatory restoration clause for full infrastructure removal upon closure.

The Andorran Association for the Protection of Animals, Plants and the Environment (APAPMA) has publicly rejected plans for a cable car in Canillo parish linking to the Tibetan bridge in Riu Valley's Armiana area.

In a social media post shared with local media on Thursday, the group condemned the project as an extension of a tourism model that prioritises economic returns over public natural heritage. APAPMA highlighted a years-long pattern among certain administrations of pursuing the "Disneyfication" of Andorra's mountains through paid attractions aimed at boosting visitor numbers.

"No more expansion of this model of attractions designed to bring in more tourists and charge them," the organisation stated, making its opposition to the Armiana cable car explicit.

Even if the initiative proceeds, APAPMA reiterated demands similar to those it raised for the Carroi cable car project. It insisted on a mandatory clause obliging Canillo commune or the contracted firm to restore the site to its original condition upon closure, including full removal of infrastructure in line with existing laws.

Canillo authorities have not commented on the criticism.
