Key Points

  • Land transfer agreement nearing completion between Canillo, Encamp, and Andorran government.
  • Project spans parishes, targets local power for heating/lighting to cut imports.
  • Remaining issues: SAEDTE access concessions, expected resolution Feb/March.
  • Described as national initiative for energy autonomy; no capacity/timeline details.

Canillo and Encamp parishes are close to finalizing a land transfer agreement to enable the Pic del Maià wind farm, with both sides and the Andorran government fully aligned on advancing the project.

Jordi Alcobé, Canillo's lead consul, reiterated the shared commitment among the parishes and the government to push forward this key energy initiative. "We share 100% the will of both parishes as well as the Andorran government to build a wind farm at Pic del Maià for its energy impact and especially to gain energy autonomy," he said. The site spans the two parishes, and the project aims to produce local power for needs like heating and lighting, reducing reliance on imports.

The remaining hurdles centre on access arrangements tied to a concession from SAEDTE, Andorra's state-owned energy transmission firm. Alcobé noted that formalities for each access point still need clarification, but political determination is strong. He indicated the transfer could be completed this February or March, without specifying an exact date. "I don't know if it will be February or March, in any case the will is there and we are tying up the loose ends to do this in the best possible way and as quickly as possible," he added.

Alcobé described the effort as a national project requiring parish contributions, underscoring its role in bolstering Andorra's energy independence. No details have emerged on the wind farm's capacity or construction timeline.
