Andorra's Rexcatering Recovers 1,202 Surplus Meals to Cut Waste

Andorra la Vella's Rexcatering machine has recovered 1,202 surplus meals from the Calones canteen since its launch on 18 June last year, distributing them in individual portions for a symbolic €1 fee.

The council initiative seeks to reduce food waste, encourage responsible consumption, and repurpose edible surplus items. Officials acknowledge several outages during the second half of 2025 caused by staffing shortages or technical faults, yet describe the overall assessment as positive, citing solid public response.

Council representatives note that Christmas usage showed no notable spikes compared to other periods, but maintained steady levels. This pattern, they say, demonstrates that the service addresses a fundamental community demand rather than fleeting or seasonal appeal.

To sustain operations, the council has increased technical assistance and is addressing personnel gaps. These measures aim to prevent disruptions and position Rexcatering as a reliable element of local social and sustainability programs.
