Key Points

  • 100 cubic meters of rock fell 150m above intact dynamic nets.
  • Drone and ground inspections found no signs of further movement.
  • Recurring hazards mitigated by €15M in protections over 30 years.
  • First dynamic bar caught 90% of dislodged blocks.

Inspection of the Solana slope near Santa Coloma in Andorra la Vella has confirmed its stability following Tuesday afternoon's rockfall in the Forat Fosc channel, with no signs of imminent further movements.

Technicians carried out drone surveys and thorough on-site examinations, determining that roughly 100 cubic metres of rock shifted in the incident. The material came to rest around 150 metres above the dynamic nets in the Carrer dels Barrers area, leaving the protective barriers undamaged and fully intact.

The Andorra la Vella communal corporation stated that risk levels remain within typical parameters for the sector. Authorities have ruled out additional falls connected to the event.

Government spokesperson Guillem Casal offered further insights at a Wednesday press conference after the Council of Ministers meeting. He pointed out that the Forat Fosc channel faces recurring natural hazards due to its challenging geology but benefits from targeted protections, including two dynamic bars at the site. The first bar caught 90% of the dislodged blocks, Casal said, while the remainder stopped naturally.

Casal also noted the Andorran government's €15 million investment over the past three decades in Solana to mitigate landslide risks. A monitoring firm's drone flew over the area Wednesday morning and found no concerns, though he added that extra inspections—drone-based or ground-level—stand ready if required.
