Andorra's Cornea Transplant Program Succeeds with 6 Implants in First 10 Months

Andorra's cornea transplant programme has achieved six successful implantations from 17 effective donations within its first 10 months of operation, Health Minister Helena Mas has reported.

The minister highlighted these results as evidence of early progress in the country's transplant initiatives. The six procedures have improved the quality of life for several patients, she noted. Mas attributed the figures to the solidarity of Andorran society, describing donation as an increasingly recognised act of collective commitment.

In parallel, the bone marrow donation register now lists 720 people. One effective donation has reached a recipient, while a second remains pending due to the patient's health status. The ministry views these developments positively, despite their limited scale so far, and emphasised the need to expand the donor base.

Blood donation campaigns continue to see strong participation, reinforcing the solidary foundation of Andorra's healthcare system.

Looking ahead, the government plans to introduce multi-tissue donation in 2026, followed by a phased expansion into organ transplants from 2027. These steps involve significant complexity but are supported by collaborations with the Organización Nacional de Trasplantes (ONT), OCATT, and the Banc de Sang i Teixits de Catalunya. Mas stressed the importance of this partnership in meeting the set objectives.
