Andorra MP Questions Hospital's Surgical Equipment Purchases Amid Neurosurgery Shortages

Andorra Endavant MP Noemí Amador has submitted an oral question to the government, pressing for clarification on the Servei Andorrà d’Atenció Sanitària (SAAS) criteria behind recent surgical equipment purchases at Nostra Senyora de Meritxell Hospital.

Amador's initiative follows concerns raised by healthcare professionals about shortages of essential tools, particularly in neurosurgery. These gaps—including ultrasonic scalpels, microsurgery instruments, intraoperative electrophysiology monitoring devices, and advanced surgical microscopes—reportedly force patient transfers abroad, even though qualified staff are available locally.

The MP highlighted the allocation of substantial funds to high-cost items, such as a recently incorporated surgical robot, amid these ongoing deficiencies. Andorra Endavant argues that such decisions raise questions about investment priorities, urging a shift toward equipment that meets frontline patient and staff needs.

The party advocates for a more self-reliant hospital capable of handling a broader range of treatments domestically, reducing unnecessary overseas referrals. Amador emphasized that healthcare investments must address real-world demands rather than flashy technology. She stated that the focus should be on equipping professionals with the tools needed to treat patients in Andorra.
