Andorra's Ministry of Health has recalled a batch of SIMPL brand canned whole peeled tomatoes in tomato juice due to possible contamination with toxic Datura seeds.
The alert, issued yesterday and relayed through the European Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF), targets 800-gram tins with GTIN code 3560070479467, batch number L25252, and a minimum durability date of 31 December 2028.
Officials advise against consuming any of these products and recommend returning them to the point of purchase. Datura seeds contain tropane alkaloids that can cause acute poisoning, with symptoms such as dry mouth, dilated pupils, vision problems, rapid heartbeat, agitation, confusion, and disorientation.
Anyone who has eaten the tomatoes and notices these effects should seek immediate medical help from their primary care doctor, the relevant Primary Care Centre (CAP), or hospital emergency services.
