Andorra Sees 14% Rise in Suicide Attempts, Youth Helplines Busy

Andorra's Health Ministry reports a sharp increase in suicide attempts amid calls to combat stigma and bolster youth support. Helplines reveal heavy use by young adults, while experts stress early intervention.

Key Points

  • Hospital emergency services recorded 123 suicide attempts in 2025, up 14% from 108, with completed suicides rising from 4 to 5.
  • Suicide rate at 5.61 per 100,000 remains below France (13.4) and Spain (7.7); Línia Verda helpline had 37% calls from 18-23 year-olds.
  • ADJRA warns data understates risks due to stigma; youth face bullying, social media pressures; association runs school workshops.
  • Ministry promotes national strategy with training, campaigns; early 2026 helpline data shows 65 calls, 63% women.

Andorra's hospital emergency services recorded 123 suicide attempts in 2025, a 14% increase from 108 the previous year, with completed suicides rising from four to five, according to Health Ministry data.

The figures, equivalent to one case every three days, were released on World Suicide Prevention Day. Officials noted that Andorra's suicide rate of 5.61 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants remains below that of neighbours, where World Health Organization 2019 data showed France at 13.4 per 100,000 and Spain at 7.7—both above the EU average of 10.15.

Sandra Cano, president of the Andorran Association for the Defence of Youth at Risk (ADJRA), warned that the hospital data understates the full scope of risk situations. Many people manage crises at home without seeking help, she said, due to social stigma around suicide. Cano stressed that suicide is not always linked to mental illness; it can stem from traumatic moments even in those without prior history. For youth, the group highlights school bullying and social media pressures as aggravating factors. "Sometimes young people want to disappear, and the way to become invisible is to die," she explained.

ADJRA urges distinguishing between distress, ideation, and attempts, while addressing all expressions of adolescent unease. The association will continue workshops in schools this year to build self-esteem, challenge stigma, and teach help-seeking skills.

On the Línia Verda 177 helpline, its first year saw 37% of calls from ages 18-23 and 4% from under-18s, totalling 83 calls with three emergency activations. A parallel emotional support channel for youth logged 197 conversations from October 2024 to September 2025, aiding 65 users, 63% of whom were minors.

The ministry described suicide as a complex, multifactorial issue amid overall stability, calling for enhanced prevention through its national strategy of training, campaigns, and risk interventions. It promotes the Línia 177 service and has issued media guidelines to separate facts from myths. In early 2026 data, Línia Verda handled 65 calls without emergency activations, supporting 155 people across 245 contacts, with women comprising 63% of callers and 52% aged 32-65. Cano emphasised publicising such resources to encourage early help-seeking and normalise mental health discussions.
