Party pushes for AI, drones and expanded services to modernise sector

Andorra Endavant has tabled 25 amendments to the government's Pharmaceutical Organisation Bill, aiming to update the sector for technological and healthcare advances.

The parliamentary group argues the current draft remains too rigid, rooted in outdated thinking and ill-suited to modern needs. Their proposals, drawn from pharmacy sector input, focus on five key areas to broaden pharmacy roles while ensuring professional oversight, data protection and traceability.

Central to the changes is enabling pharmacies to collect and send biological samples to authorised labs, under strict protocols and authorisations. This would bring essential services closer to patients, cutting unnecessary travel—particularly for elderly people and those with mobility issues.

Other measures include professional-supervised AI tools for initial clinical guidance, drug interaction checks, treatment monitoring and multilingual support. Pharmacies could also conduct rapid tests for screening and diagnosis, plus teleassistance combining remote and in-person care.

The amendments allow remote dispensing and home delivery, verified via electronic prescriptions and handled by approved operators. They envisage future use of automated systems or drones, subject to regulations, with safeguards for cybersecurity, medicine storage and patient privacy.

Additional provisions support family-owned pharmacy continuity, recognise experienced auxiliaries' roles under pharmacist supervision, and set administrative deadlines to prevent delays.

Andorra Endavant stresses that a forward-looking law should accommodate innovations without frequent revisions, preserving professional accountability and public safety. The bill is now in parliamentary process.
