Hospital Nostra Senyora de Meritxell is set to install a new MRI scanner and create a high-containment unit for infectious diseases, with total costs surpassing €2 million.
The government has opened tenders for the works needed to deploy the MRI equipment, which was awarded in September. Installing it will involve restructuring space and upgrading facilities over 12 weeks. The scanner will support high-precision diagnostic imaging in the public health network, helping to limit referrals to outside providers, cut waiting lists, eliminate redundant scans, and ease patient journeys.
In parallel, the isolation area targets high-risk cases such as Ebola or Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever. The minister-spokesperson outlined the project following a Council of Ministers meeting, stressing its focus on trapping pathogens. Key features include compartmentalised airtight rooms, independent circulation routes, strict surface decontamination protocols, and sophisticated ventilation with pressure management. This phase carries an eight-month timeline.
Bids from interested firms are due by 5pm on 25 November through the public procurement portal.
