The Andorran Council of Ministers has approved a tender for construction works to create new oncology facilities at Nostra Senyora de Meritxell Hospital on the -3 basement level.
This project ranks among the Servei Andorrà d'Atenció Sanitària's (SAAS) top priorities for the year, designed to consolidate all oncology services into a single space. The setup will include outpatient clinics for medical oncology and radiotherapy, oncology nursing, psycho-oncology services, social work support, and a dedicated day hospital with a nursing consultation room, treatment areas, and 10 medical or inpatient bays. Officials say the arrangement will enable multidisciplinary care while prioritizing patient needs.
Government spokesperson Guillem Casal emphasized that the redesign eliminates the need for patients to move between hospital departments or through inpatient areas, enhancing their safety and care quality. Once complete, the facilities will feature separate circulation routes, including direct pedestrian and elevator access from Fiter i Rossell street, resulting in more accessible and patient-friendly environments.
The eight-month works will repurpose space previously occupied by outpatient mental health services and the Addictive Behaviours Unit, both relocated in October 2025 to the nearby El Ròdol building in Escaldes-Engordany.
Casal highlighted broader advances in oncology, noting the January 2025 opening of a breast pathology unit that now allows local surgeries for breast cancer using cutting-edge technology, reducing the need for patients to seek treatment abroad.
