The Andorran Council of Ministers has approved a tender for construction works to establish new oncology facilities at Nostra Senyora de Meritxell Hospital on the -3 basement level.

This initiative forms part of the Servei Andorrà d'Atenció Sanitària's (SAAS) strategic priorities for the year, aiming to centralize all oncology services in one location. The space will house outpatient clinics for medical oncology and radiotherapy, oncology nursing, psycho-oncology and social work consultations, plus a new day hospital featuring a nursing clinic, treatment zones, and 10 medical or inpatient bays. The design supports multidisciplinary treatment with the patient at the core of care.

Government spokesperson Guillem Casal stated that the layout prevents patients from navigating between hospital departments or inpatient zones, thereby boosting their safety and overall treatment quality. Upon completion after eight months, the area will offer distinct circulation paths, including direct pedestrian and elevator access from Fiter i Rossell street, creating more comfortable and welcoming spaces.

The site was previously used by outpatient mental health services and the Addictive Behaviours Unit, which moved in October 2025 to the El Ròdol building in Escaldes-Engordany.

Casal also pointed to recent oncology progress, including the January 2025 launch of a breast pathology unit equipped with advanced technology for local breast cancer surgeries, sparing patients overseas travel.
