Andorra Housing Union Calls May 16 Demo Against Rent Extension Ban

The Sindicat de l’Habitatge d’Andorra has called for a demonstration on 16 May starting at 19.30 from the KM 0 roundabout to protest against the government’s proposed law ending rent contract extensions.

The group, which refers to the legislation as the “Llei d’Expulsió Programada,” plans a march through the streets of the Principat to highlight public opposition. Organisers emphasise that the event aims to make their stance visible rather than remain stationary.

In a statement shared on social media, the Sindicat criticised the DA-led government’s decision to lift the rent extension policy, which it says affects about half the population. The collective views this as a return to a system favouring landlords over tenants, prioritising profits for a few and risking the displacement of the working class.

The Sindicat noted that protests which began in 2024 have continued, leading to the formation of its organised structure to gather public responses and proposals on housing. It referenced demands raised during a 5 April 2025 demonstration, first announced weeks earlier at a gathering of nearly 200 people in Plaça del Consell General.

Authorities must still approve the event, with the Interior Ministry set to review the proposal due to potential traffic impacts. The group has urged residents to join the 16 May action.
