Andorra Tourist Numbers Drop 1.6% in August but Stays Lengthen

Andorra saw 1,105,986 visitors in August, marking a 4.9% decline from the previous year, according to the latest Department of Statistics data.

Of these, 547,148 were tourists, representing 49.5% of the total and down 1.6% year-on-year. Day-trippers totaled 558,838, or 50.5%, with an 8% drop. By origin, Spanish visitors fell 4.4% to 444,372, French arrivals decreased 8.3% to 539,568, and those from other countries grew 11% to 122,046.

Tourists averaged 3.3 nights in the country, an increase from 2.9 nights last August. Spaniards averaged 3.4 nights, up from 2.8; French visitors stayed 2.6 nights on average, compared with 2.4 previously; and other nationalities held steady at 4 nights. Some 87.2% of tourists stayed in hotels, aparthotels, or tourist apartments.

Over the past 12 months, overall visitors declined 2.4%, driven by a 3.6% rise in tourists offset by a 7.6% fall in day-trippers. French visitors dropped 11.1% in that period, while Spaniards increased 1.9% and others rose 11.7%.

Shopping drew 36.3% of all visitors, followed by nature-related activities at 26.7%. For tourists, nature activities topped the list at 39.7%, ahead of sports at 12.3%, shopping at 10.8%, wellness and thermalism at 10.5%, and other reasons at 10.3%. Day-trippers overwhelmingly cited shopping, at 83.4%, with 7.6% passing through.

Vehicle entries reached 429,811, down 5.2%. Passenger cars decreased 5.4%, while heavy vehicles edged up 1.3%. Entries from France dropped 7.3% to 157,117, and from Spain fell 3.9% to 272,694. From January to August, total entries declined 5.4%, with Spanish entries off 0.2% and French down 16.7%.

Visitor-days for the year to date climbed 2.2%, buoyed by extended tourist stays despite fewer arrivals.
