The Ministry of Institutional Relations, Education and Universities has rolled out an artificial intelligence training programme for 880 students aged 14 to 15 across Andorra's three education systems this February.
The "Artificial Intelligence with Awareness" initiative targets third-year lower secondary pupils and equivalents. It forms one of the 30 measures in the Comprehensive Plan for the Proper Use of Technology in Education, which has been implemented progressively since last school year. The programme addresses the General Council's mandate for the government to promote child digital wellbeing, including through the Centre for Digital Wellbeing and Competencies.
Albert Maluquer, director of the Department of Education Systems and International Relations, said the effort aims to equip young people with tools to engage critically and responsibly with AI, which is increasingly common in their everyday, school and social lives. He described it as building a resource bank of activities to foster critical use of such tools, highlighting both risks and opportunities.
Delivered via three thematic capsules on the Genially multimedia platform—in Catalan, adapted to Andorra's context and free of commercial brand mentions—the content runs until the end of the school year. It covers AI fundamentals, ethical considerations, data protection, disinformation detection, biases in generative systems and forming reasoned opinions. These elements build key skills including critical technology use, digital privacy, responsible citizenship and self-regulated learning.
Reflective assessments feature in each capsule, such as gamified self-evaluations, quizzes, personalised feedback and debate forums. These support student reflection, progress monitoring and motivation, while providing insights for teachers, with students at the centre of the process.
Mireia Martos, a third-year lower secondary tutor at Col·legi Sant Ermengol, noted that 14- to 15-year-olds already interact routinely with digital platforms and social networks, making this a critical age for the training. At her school, the capsules unfold over three tutorial sessions. The first includes an initial knowledge self-assessment, group discussions, hands-on exercises to distinguish real from AI-generated content, and a final reflection.
Comprehensive support materials—presentations, worksheets, digital resources and self-assessment rubrics—allow flexible use across subjects, in classrooms, groups or independently. Their transversal nature suits teachers from various fields.
Now distributed to all systems, the programme has started at sites including Col·legi Sant Ermengol. The ministry plans annual repetition at this level to ensure full coverage and reinforce responsible technology integration in comprehensive education.
