Andorra's Farms Drop to 340 in 2025 Amid Aging Owners
Agricultural operations fell slightly to 340, with steady decade-long numbers but declining revenue farms, aging managers, and reduced apiculture.
Key Points
- Farms fell to 340 from 343; revenue livestock: 60 equines (-6), 44 sheep (-2), 42 cattle, 26 goats.
- Fish farming covers 70% revenue land (11.58M sqm); hay 23%, tobacco 5%.
- Aging owners: 51-60 (67 titles), over 90 (30 farms); youth minimal.
- Apiculture: 26 operations, 416 hives (-49 from 2024).
Andorra's agricultural and livestock farms continued their downward trend in 2025, dropping to 340 registered operations by year's end, down three from 343 at the close of 2024.
The Agriculture Department reported the decline following an eight-farm loss between 2023 and 2024. Despite the drop, officials noted the figure remains steady compared to the past decade, when numbers hovered between roughly 340 and 350.
Among the operations, 194 produced no revenue-generating livestock, unchanged from the prior year. Revenue-generating farms included 60 with equines (down six), 44 with sheep (down two), 42 with cattle, and 26 with goats.
Parishes with the most revenue-generating farms were Sant Julià de Lòria (28) and Canillo (23), followed by Encamp, Ordino, and La Massana (14 each). Andorra la Vella had eight, and Escaldes-Engordany seven. For non-revenue farms, La Massana led with 39, then Sant Julià de Lòria (33) and Canillo (28). Escaldes-Engordany had the fewest revenue farms at seven, alongside lower non-revenue counts in Ordino (20) and Encamp (24).
Land use data showed fish farming dominating revenue operations at 11.58 million square metres, or 70% of the total. Non-revenue farms allocated 62% of their space—1.83 million square metres—to fish ponds as well. Hayfields covered 23.34% of cropland nationwide (4.54 million square metres), while tobacco occupied 5.28% (1.03 million square metres). Potatoes, vegetables, vines, and forage each accounted for less than 1%.
Farm owners and managers are aging, with the 51-60 age group holding the most titles (67) and delegations (28), closely followed by 61-70 (66 titles, 24 delegations). The 71-80 bracket had 60 titles and 14 delegations; 81-90 had 40 titles and five delegations; and 30 farms had owners over 90. Younger groups included 42 people aged 31-40 (29 titles, 13 delegations), 47 aged 41-50 (32 titles, 15 delegations), and eight aged 21-30 (one title, seven delegations).
Apiculture also slowed, falling to 26 operations with 416 hives by end-2025, from 28 operations and 465 hives in 2024. Canillo hosted seven operations and 151 hives, followed by Sant Julià de Lòria (140 hives). Encamp, La Massana, Sant Julià de Lòria, and Escaldes-Engordany each had four operations; Ordino and Andorra la Vella had one each. Fourteen operations focused solely on bees, with 12 treating it as secondary. Twenty-one used honey for personal consumption, while five sold it.
