Teachers and education staff in the Alt Pirineu region staged intermittent 15-minute roadblocks on the N-260 highway between Castellciutat and La Seu d'Urgell this morning, as part of a second day of strikes across Catalonia.

Around 50 people gathered for the action, which continues with new participants joining. The protests demand better working conditions, including reduced bureaucracy, lower student-teacher ratios, investment in inclusion resources, and salary increases. Organizers view these as essential rights for public education workers.

The mobilisation aligns with a broader calendar of actions throughout Catalonia, focusing on improved labour conditions and more funding for public schools in the Alt Urgell area.

Ismael Sánchez, a CGT militant and teacher at Institut Joan Brudieu, said the protests aim to enhance both working conditions and public education quality. He called for lower ratios, more resources for inclusion, and higher pay. Sánchez criticised a recent agreement between the Generalitat de Catalunya and a minority of unions, claiming it was made "behind the backs of most workers" and has fueled ongoing actions.

Protesters combined roadblocks with information pickets in the locality. A midday demonstration is scheduled for 12:30, marching through the municipality before a claim-focused lunch at Plaça de les Monges. Sánchez described the gathering as a chance to share experiences and build solidarity among staff from the region's scattered schools.

The day will end with an assembly at 16:00 to discuss proposals and plan future steps. Sánchez stressed that assemblies must guide the movement through collective organisation.

Andreu Múmbru, USTEC's syndical action coordinator, called the strike "successful," noting similar disruptions like roadblocks and slow marches across Catalonia. "We're carrying out these actions to send a very clear message to the government," he said. Múmbru dismissed the recent deal as unacceptable, arguing it ignores the majority of education staff, and urged fresh talks for a "truly decent" agreement.
