Group Challenges Government's 'Dignified' Eviction Housing Claim
Coordinadora per un Habitatge Digne argues that hostel shelter for evicted single mother falls short of dignified solution, amid rising housing.
Key Points
- Coordinadora challenges govt claim that evicted single mother in Arca d'Aixovall hostel is 'dignified' housing.
- Case deemed 'singular' due to owner's need, but reveals patterns of vulnerability and institutional gaps.
- Criticizes poor coordination between Tràmits and INH, lack of emergency mechanisms.
- Demands affordable, dignified replacements over hostels to protect work-family balance.
The Coordinadora per un Habitatge Digne has challenged recent government statements on the eviction of a single mother with children, arguing that temporary hostel accommodation does not qualify as a "dignified" solution.
The citizen group responded after the Executive insisted that "nobody has ever been left on the street following an eviction." The mother, who lost her rental home, is now staying at the Arca d'Aixovall shelter. While the Coordinadora said it has no knowledge of identical cases, it described this one as "quite singular," involving the legitimate need of the property owner to occupy the flat, which made the tenant's departure unavoidable. Authorities offered her a hostel bed "in extremis," but the group stressed this does not make the situation isolated.
In recent months, the entity has noted emerging patterns of housing vulnerability, including difficulties accessing affordable flats and a sense of institutional neglect. It pointed to poor coordination among housing bodies—for instance, a disconnect between the Tràmits service and the Institut Nacional de l'Habitatge (INH) on information requests—without accusing anyone of bad faith.
The Coordinadora highlighted a broader "lack of capacity" to deploy all available emergency mechanisms and provide truly affordable, guaranteed options. It urged the government to show more self-criticism, noting that while no one is left homeless, current alternatives fall short of optimal standards.
The group reiterated a demand first raised on 5 April last year: those unable to stay in their homes must receive dignified and affordable replacements. A hostel stay, it argued, fails to meet this threshold and undermines work-family balance.
