A woman in Andorra la Vella hired a painter to renovate her apartment and gave him the keys to carry out the work. She paid him €200 upfront for materials and labour. She later handed over another €400 after he promised to buy and install a mirror, but he kept the money without fulfilling the commitment.
The woman also lent the painter €500 when he claimed his daughter faced financial difficulties and needed urgent help. He assured her he would repay the sum, but never did.
While she was away on holiday, the painter moved into her apartment. He found a credit card there, along with its PIN written on a note, and withdrew €600 in total. He also took €400 that she was due to receive from renting the flat to friends for a few days.
When the woman filed a complaint, the total amount she sought to recover came to €1,940. Police checks revealed the man had prior convictions for misappropriation.
A court sentenced him to 10 months in prison, to be served immediately, plus a suspended six-month term that would activate if he commits another offence within the next four years.
