Portugal's PM Montenegro Visits Andorra to Inaugurate Consulate, Boost Ties

Portugal's Prime Minister Luís Montenegro will make his first official visit to Andorra on 20 May, focusing on bilateral cooperation and the inauguration of a new Portuguese consulate.

Head of Government Xavier Espot will host Montenegro at the Administrative Building for an institutional meeting, followed by a working session with technical teams. Discussions will cover bilateral and multilateral matters, ties with the European Union, and ways to strengthen relations between the two countries. A key highlight will be the signing of a cooperation agreement on internal security.

The visit will end with a joint press conference by Espot and Montenegro. The Portuguese delegation includes non-resident Ambassador to Andorra José Augusto Duarte, Secretary of State for Portuguese Communities Emídio Sousa, and the new Consul General to Andorra Duarte Pinto da Rocha. Espot will be joined by Foreign Affairs Minister Imma Tor and Ambassador to Portugal Olga Gelabert.

Montenegro will also inaugurate Portugal's new Consulate General in Andorra la Vella, located on Carrer Prat de la Creu, at 16:30. The facility will serve around 8,500 Portuguese residents. Later, at 18:30, he will host a reception at the Andorra Park Hotel.

This trip marks the first official stay by Montenegro in the Principality and comes more than 30 years after diplomatic relations were established in 1994. It was originally scheduled for 29 January but postponed due to severe weather from Storm Kristin, which caused significant damage and fatalities in Portugal.
