The Andorran government has approved a €20,000 contribution to the Andorran Red Cross to support victims of the 7.4-magnitude earthquake that struck western Colombia on 10 August, with its epicentre in the El Chocó region.
The funds will be transferred to the Colombian Red Cross to address urgent needs, including health services, sanitation, mental health support, and shelter for those left homeless. This donation aligns with the Andorran Red Cross's fundraising campaign and one of four pillars of Andorra's international cooperation for sustainable development.
The earthquake has affected more than 449,000 people, causing 331 deaths, 4,500 injuries, and 136 missing persons. Material damage includes over 37,000 homes destroyed and 198,000 damaged, alongside impacts to hospitals, 406 health centres, and more than 4,600 schools. The disaster has triggered a humanitarian crisis across various cities and remote regions.
Government spokesperson and Foreign Affairs Minister Guillem Casal noted that the aid targets recovery in the hardest-hit areas. The contribution was announced during a Council of Ministers meeting and focuses on immediate action based on local priorities.
