Andorra's futsal team has secured qualification for the Main Round of the Futsal World Cup qualifiers after a 5-0 victory over Malta on Friday at Hjørring's Hallen Park Vendia in Denmark. The win completed a perfect group stage with six points from two matches, following a record 10-0 rout of Scotland earlier in the week. The side now faces hosts Denmark on Saturday at 15:00 to contest top spot in Group A, with the top two advancing.
Arnau Rodríguez opened the scoring in the second minute against Malta, finishing a deep pass from his brother Uri Rodríguez. Christian Regalo doubled the lead before halftime, lobbing keeper Clint Mifsud after a run from Adrià Blat. Brayan Pinto made it three shortly into the second half with a long-range effort that Mifsud spilled. Mifsud was sent off with a straight red for fouling Claudi Bové, who left injured, paving the way for Jose Segura's curling fourth from distance. Regalo added his second on a counter during Malta's power play with a keeper-player.
The result followed Denmark's 5-1 win over Malta and came ahead of the hosts' 3-1 defeat of Scotland on Friday, mathematically confirming Andorra's progression. Coach Talin Puyalto highlighted the team's execution of the game plan, defensive resilience against Malta's physical play—featuring 10 players from champions Luxol St Andrews, including Brazilians Maikinho and Celino Alves, coached by ex-Italy boss Roberto Menichelli—and composure amid late disruptions. "We followed the game plan perfectly, stayed solid when they used a flying keeper, and showed patience despite their attempts to disrupt play," Puyalto said. He praised the squad's growth, noting the historic clean sheets and qualification exceeded expectations, while lamenting Arnau Rodríguez's late Achilles injury relapse—his first senior call-up since a long-term absence, limited to three ENFAF games previously. "The team is happy on one hand and very sad on the other; Arnau is one of our key captains," he added.
In the Scotland match, Jose Segura claimed a hat-trick, Adrià Blat scored twice, with further goals from Èric Mesquita, Pinto, Regalo, Óscar San Segundo (Sanse) and an own goal by Ahmed Aloulou of Manchester Futsal Club. Andorra led 5-0 at halftime in their biggest-ever win.
Puyalto's squad ranks 35th in UEFA futsal, ahead of Malta (43rd) and Scotland (49th) but behind Denmark (32nd). Pol Villalta missed out after clavicle surgery. Roster: goalkeepers Aitor Rubio, Xavi López (Xavito), Max Pons; outfielders Uri Rodríguez (Oriol Rodríguez), Èric Mesquita, Roc Torres, Adrià Blat, Jose Segura, Brayan Pinto, Óscar Sanse, Christian Regalo, Paco Domínguez (Francisco Domínguez), Claudi Bové, Arnau Rodríguez.
This success builds on third place in last year's Preeuropeu group, despite recent friendly losses to Germany.
