VPC Andorra Stuns CAR Sevilla 23-18 in Dramatic Comeback Win

VPC Andorra came from a 10-point deficit to defeat CAR Sevilla 23-18 at Estadi Nacional on Saturday, securing their first win in Spain's División de Honor B promotion phase.

The victory ended a three-match losing streak for coach Dani Raya's side against a Sevilla team, led by José Ignacio Moreno, that entered holding fourth place—seven points clear and occupying the final playoff spot. The Tricolors had shown promise in their previous outing, a narrow defeat to leaders Getxo on the final play two weeks ago.

Sevilla opened the scoring in the 12th minute with a penalty from Sebastián Poet, taking a 0-3 lead. Gastón González equalized at 3-3 soon after. Samoan forward Leo Tavita Brown then scored a try, converted by Poet, for 3-10.

VPC hit back before halftime as Hugo Llata touched down following a pass from Thibaut Trape, though González missed the conversion, leaving it 8-10. Tavita added his second try late in the half, but Poet's kick struck the post, sending teams in at 8-15.

Sevilla extended their advantage early in the second half with a centered penalty from Sebastián Coet, pushing the margin to 10 points at 8-18. Trape missed a long-range effort, but González pulled one back to make it 11-18.

A yellow card to Sevilla handed VPC a numerical advantage, shifting momentum. KG Matlena's powerful run set up Cristian Abarca's try for 16-18, with González converting to level at 18-18.

Two minutes from time, Matlena sealed the comeback with a try after Adrià Casals regained possession, securing 23-18 and sparking celebrations among the home fans.

"No ha estat un partit fàcil, ja que el Sevilla és un rival molt dur. Aquesta vegada sí que hem gestionat bé el final. Una victòria que feia falta," Raya said.

Now with one win and three losses, VPC remain bottom but trail fourth place by four points with four rounds left. They face fifth-placed CAU Valencia away next week, needing near-perfect results to keep playoff hopes alive.
