Davide Foccoli and Stefano Goria of Scott Racing took the men's lead in the Andorra Epic Pyrénées after edging out rivals by a single second to win the opening 49km stage, which featured 1,440m of positive elevation gain. The Italian pair launched a decisive attack in the final 10km, finishing ahead of David Valero and Samuele Porro of Klimatiza Orbea. Simon Stiebjahn and Martin Frey of Singer KTM Racing claimed third.
In the women's category, Monica Calderón and Costanza Fasolis of Massi ISB Sport dominated the inaugural leg, beating Maria Zarantonello and Chrystelle Baumann of Metallurgica Veneta-Next Ride by 2 minutes and 9 seconds. Meritxell Figueras Garangou and Alba Teruel Ribes of ISB Cyclistwork Factory took third. Top contenders Katazina Sosna-Pinelė and Giorgia Marchet lost over 20 minutes after suffering a puncture while leading the race.
The stage included climbs to Coll de Cabús and Collada Muntaner.
Riders now tackle stage two on Thursday, billed as the queen stage with 61km, 2,200m of ascent and 2,300m of descent. Lac de Pessons marks one of the highest points on the route.
